Why I Switched to Reverse Osmosis Water (And What They Forgot to Put in the Headlines)

From pineal gland calcification to pharmaceutical hormones in tap water — here is the full file on what is actually coming out of your faucet and what I did about it.

Five years ago I was doom scrolling TikTok — as one does — when I kept stumbling across something that refused to leave my brain alone. People were talking about fluoride and pineal gland calcification. The pineal gland is a tiny pine cone shaped structure deep in your brain that produces melatonin and has been called the “third eye” across spiritual traditions for centuries. The claim was that fluoride accumulates there and calcifies it over time.

My first instinct was to dismiss it. My second instinct, because I am who I am, was to go find the receipts.

What I found sent me so far down the rabbit hole that I came out the other side with a full reverse osmosis system, a remineralization stage, and a very strong opinion about what comes out of your tap. Let me open the file.

Where Fluoride Actually Comes From

Here is the part that nobody puts in the pro-fluoride brochure.

The fluoride added to US municipal water supplies is not pharmaceutical grade fluoride. It is hydrofluorosilicic acid — a byproduct of phosphate fertilizer manufacturing, primarily produced in Florida. Historically, releasing this substance into the air or waterways was considered industrial pollution and disposal was expensive and heavily regulated.

Then, in the mid 20th century, it was lobbied into public water supplies under the banner of dental health. The industrial waste disposal problem became a public health program. The revolving door between industry and regulatory agencies did the rest.

Now before you say “but fluoride is good for your teeth” — that is a longer conversation that deserves its own file. The short version is that the evidence for ingested fluoride benefiting teeth is far weaker than the evidence for topical fluoride, meaning swallowing it may give you none of the dental benefit while giving you all of the systemic exposure. File that away for later.

The Neurotoxicity Research Is Real and Peer Reviewed

A 2020 meta-analysis published in Environmental Health Perspectives reviewed 64 studies on fluoride exposure and found consistent associations between higher fluoride levels and lower IQ scores in children. The authors concluded that fluoride should be considered a developmental neurotoxicant — the same category as lead and mercury.

As for pineal gland calcification specifically — a 2001 study by researcher Jennifer Luke found that the pineal gland accumulates fluoride at higher concentrations than any other tissue in the body, including bone. Her research found that this accumulation was associated with calcification of the gland. The mainstream response was largely silence. Funny how that works.

I am not telling you fluoride is a deliberate conspiracy. I am telling you the peer reviewed research exists, it raises serious questions, and most people have never been shown it.

The Pharmaceutical Problem Nobody Talks About Loudly Enough

Fluoride is just the beginning. Here is something that genuinely stopped me in my tracks.

Pharmaceutical residue — including synthetic estrogens from hormonal birth control, antidepressants, antibiotics, and blood pressure medications — has been detected in tap water supplies across the United States. These compounds pass through the human body, enter wastewater, and conventional water treatment does not fully remove them.

Here is the hypothesis that has lived rent free in my head ever since: the average age at which adolescents hit puberty has been declining steadily for decades. Simultaneously, studies show that testosterone levels in the male population have been declining historically. Both trends are documented. Both trends track alongside the rise of hormonal contraceptive use and the increasing presence of endocrine disrupting compounds in our water and environment.

Is tap water solely responsible? Almost certainly not. Is it a contributing factor worth taking seriously? I would argue absolutely yes. The file is open. The correlation deserves investigation.

The 2025 Clean Water Act Rollbacks You Need to Know About

This one is fresh and it matters.

Recent regulatory changes have removed or weakened restrictions on tens of thousands of PFAS compounds — per and polyfluoroalkyl substances — as well as other volatile organic compounds and forever chemicals from clean drinking water standards. PFAS do not break down in the environment or in the human body. They accumulate. They have been linked to cancer, thyroid disruption, immune suppression, and reproductive harm.

These compounds were already present in water supplies across the country before the rollbacks. The reduced regulatory oversight means less testing, less disclosure, and less accountability going forward.

This is not a partisan issue. This is a what-is-actually-in-my-water issue.

And here is the part that surprised even me when I learned it: these chemicals are not only a concern when you drink your water. They can be absorbed through your skin during showers and baths. Your skin is your largest organ and it is permeable. Hot water opens pores and increases absorption. A shower in unfiltered water is full body exposure.

For maximum protection, a whole house filtration system combined with an under sink RO system gives you the most comprehensive coverage — filtered water for bathing and washing, and RO water for drinking and cooking. That is the gold standard setup.

Microplastics: The Contaminant Nobody Saw Coming

If the fluoride rabbit hole did not get you, this one will.

Microplastics have been found in tap water, bottled water, rainwater, human blood, breast milk, lung tissue, and most recently — the human brain. A 2024 study published in Nature Medicine found that human brain samples contained significantly more microplastic particles than samples taken a decade earlier, with concentrations increasing year over year.

Let that sit for a moment.

Tap water picks up microplastics from aging plastic pipes throughout municipal water infrastructure. Bottled water — long marketed as the cleaner alternative — was found in a 2018 study by researchers at the State University of New York to contain twice as many microplastic particles as tap water on average. The plastic bottle is literally shedding into the water inside it.

Microplastics are not just inert particles passing through. They carry chemical additives including phthalates and bisphenols — endocrine disruptors that interfere with hormone signaling. They accumulate in tissue. And we are only beginning to understand the long term health implications because frankly we have never done this to ourselves before.

Reverse osmosis filtration removes microplastics. The membrane pore size — typically 0.0001 microns — is far smaller than even the tiniest microplastic particles. This was actually one of the secondary reasons I committed to my RO system. Fluoride got me in the door. Microplastics sealed the deal.

And once you go down the microplastics rabbit hole you also stop using plastic water bottles, plastic food containers, plastic wrap, and plastic cutting boards. But that is its own file.

The Other, Equally Important Thing Nobody Tells You About RO Water

Reverse osmosis is extraordinarily effective. It removes up to 99% of dissolved solids including fluoride, lead, PFAS, nitrates, arsenic, chlorine, pharmaceutical residue, and most everything else you do not want in your body.

Here is something I want to flag because most RO content glosses right over it. The RO membrane is exceptional at removing dissolved solids, heavy metals, chemicals, and pharmaceutical residue. But bacteria and viruses are a different category of problem entirely. They are not dissolved solids. They are biological organisms, and some can be small enough to potentially pass through or survive in a system that has no dedicated disinfection stage.

The system I use is the Express Water ROALKUV10M 11 Stage Alkaline UV Reverse Osmosis System, and the reason I chose it specifically is the UV sterilization stage. When water passes through the UV stage, ultraviolet light at 254 nanometers penetrates the cell walls of bacteria and viruses and destroys their DNA. They cannot reproduce. They are effectively neutralized. This is the same technology hospitals use for water sterilization. The same technology municipal water treatment facilities use. The combination of RO membrane filtration plus UV sterilization means your system is handling both chemical contaminants and biological ones, which makes it the most comprehensive home water treatment currently available.

It is so effective that it also removes the things you do want — calcium, magnesium, potassium, and other naturally occurring minerals that give water its structure and function.

Here is where it gets interesting. Water is not just a passive carrier. It has structure. Natural spring water contains minerals that give it a specific molecular organization — this is part of what researcher Gerald Pollack calls structured or EZ water in his work at the University of Washington. When water is stripped of its minerals through RO filtration, it loses that structure.

Demineralized water is also what some researchers call “hungry water” — because it will seek to balance itself by pulling minerals from wherever it can find them. When you drink heavily demineralized water, it can leach minerals from your body as it passes through, excreting them in urine. The World Health Organization published a report documenting the risks of demineralized drinking water, including effects on bone density, cardiovascular function, and electrolyte balance.

But here is the deeper issue — and this one is about cellular hydration. For water to actually hydrate you at a cellular level, it needs to enter each cell and reach the mitochondria. This process is facilitated by aquaporins — specialized protein channels in cell membranes that act as doorways for water. Minerals, particularly magnesium, play a critical role in facilitating this process. Without adequate mineral content, water struggles to cross the cell membrane efficiently. You can drink two liters of demineralized water and still be functionally dehydrated at the cellular level.

This is why remineralization is not optional. It is the second half of the equation. And here is the thing nobody tells you: you have options.

Option 1: Trace mineral drops. This is the easiest entry point. Products like ConcenTrace are concentrated ionic trace minerals derived from natural sources. A few drops per glass or per pitcher, no perceptible taste difference at a normal dose, and you are back in business with a full spectrum of trace minerals. Affordable, portable, and genuinely effective. If you are not ready to commit to a full system yet, start here.

Option 2: A pinch of Himalayan or Celtic sea salt. Both contain dozens of trace minerals naturally occurring in the crystal or sea matrix. Celtic sea salt is particularly mineral dense because it is harvested from living seawater and minimally processed, retaining its full mineral profile intact. Himalayan salt gets its pink color from iron oxide and contains over 80 trace minerals in its natural state. You need so little that it will not make your water taste salty. Just a small pinch per glass or pitcher is all it takes.

This is the most affordable option and something most people already have sitting in their kitchen. I personally add a pinch of Celtic sea salt to my water every other day, and I do this even though my system already has a remineralization filter stage built in. I believe in layering mineral sources rather than relying on a single input. My body does not seem to mind.

Option 3: A built-in remineralization filter stage. This is the most consistent and automated option. A remineralization stage built into your RO system passes the filtered water through a calcium and magnesium cartridge before it reaches your glass, adding those minerals back in bioavailable form with every single pour. No drops, no measuring, no remembering. The Bottom Line

Your tap water contains fluoride sourced from industrial byproduct, pharmaceutical residue including synthetic hormones, PFAS forever chemicals, and an increasingly light regulatory hand overseeing all of it. Your bottled water contains microplastics. Your shower water absorbs through your skin.

The solution is not panic. The solution is a good filter and the information to make an informed choice.
