Microplastics Are Everywhere. Here's How to Dramatically Reduce Your Exposure.
Microplastics have been found in human blood, lungs, testicles, and placentas. The research is alarming, but the practical steps to reduce your body burden are surprisingly doable.
A 2022 study published in Environment International found microplastics in 77% of human blood samples tested. A 2023 study found them in testicles. Another found them in every human placenta examined. They’re in the lungs of people who’ve never worked in a factory. They’re in deep ocean sediment and in the bodies of fish at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
The average person consumes an estimated 5 grams of microplastics per week, roughly the weight of a credit card.
I want to be clear about what we know and don’t know: the long-term health effects of chronic microplastic accumulation in humans aren’t fully established. But the preliminary evidence is not reassuring. Studies in cell cultures and animals show microplastics can disrupt hormones, trigger inflammation, cross the blood-brain barrier, and accumulate in organs. Given the sheer ubiquity and the trajectory of the research, reducing exposure seems prudent.
Here’s everything I’ve changed, and why.
Where Microplastics Come From
Before you can reduce exposure, you need to understand the sources. They break into a few major categories:
Plastic packaging and food contact: Every time plastic comes into contact with food or water, especially when heated, particles leach into what you consume. A 2019 study found that water in PET plastic bottles contains 22 times more microplastic particles than water from glass bottles.
Drinking water: Municipal tap water contains microplastics from pipes, filtration systems, and aerial deposition. Bottled water is worse: the WHO found an average of 325 microplastic particles per liter in bottled water vs. 5.5 per liter in tap water.
Sea salt and sea food: Seafood filters enormous volumes of ocean water and accumulates whatever’s in it. Sea salt harvested from open ocean contains microplastics; Himalayan pink salt and rock salt do not.
Indoor air: Synthetic textiles shed microfibers into the air. Your carpets, upholstered furniture, and polyester clothing are continuously releasing tiny particles that you breathe and ingest.
Tea bags: Many commercial tea bags are made from nylon or polyethylene terephthalate (PET). A single bag steeped in hot water can release over 11 billion microplastic particles into your cup.
The Highest-Impact Swaps
1. Switch to Glass and Stainless Steel for All Beverages
This is the highest-leverage change. If you’re drinking water from plastic bottles or heating coffee in a plastic cup, you’re getting a concentrated daily dose.
What I use:
- Glass water bottles at home (borosilicate glass is the most durable)
- Stainless steel bottle for travel
- Ceramic mug for hot drinks. Never plastic, never paper cups with plastic lining
The polyethylene-lined paper cups at most coffee shops shed microplastics into your hot drink. Bring your own.
2. Filter Your Drinking Water
Neither tap nor plastic-bottled water is ideal. The solution is filtered tap water in glass.
Reverse osmosis (RO) is the most effective technology. It removes particles down to 0.0001 microns, eliminating essentially all microplastics, along with chlorine, heavy metals, and most pathogens. A countertop or under-sink RO system is a one-time investment that pays off immediately.
If RO isn’t feasible, a Berkey gravity filter or a high-quality carbon block filter significantly reduces microplastic content.
3. Replace Plastic Food Storage with Glass
Plastic containers leach the most when:
- They’re heated (microwave, dishwasher)
- They’re scratched or worn
- They contain acidic or fatty foods (these accelerate leaching)
Replace your plastic Tupperware with glass or stainless steel. The glass Pyrex sets are inexpensive, last decades, and are better in every practical way: cleaner, no staining, no odor retention.
Specific things to stop doing:
- Microwaving in plastic containers (even “microwave-safe” plastic, as this label refers to structural integrity, not safety from leaching)
- Storing fatty foods like olive oil or peanut butter in plastic
- Leaving plastic water bottles in a hot car
4. Switch to Loose-Leaf Tea
If you drink tea daily from commercial tea bags, you’re getting a meaningful dose of microplastics. Loose-leaf tea in a stainless steel or glass infuser eliminates this entirely.
Better tea, no microplastics, lower long-term cost. This is an easy win.
5. Choose Sea Salt Alternatives
Himalayan pink salt, kosher salt, and other non-ocean rock salts have significantly lower or zero microplastic contamination compared to sea salt harvested from open ocean. Simple swap.
6. Vacuum Regularly and Choose Natural Fibers
Synthetic carpet and upholstery are a surprisingly significant indoor source. Vacuuming with a HEPA-filtered vacuum reduces airborne microfibers. For new purchases, choosing wool, cotton, linen, and other natural fibers over polyester and nylon reduces the ongoing shedding load.
What About Detoxing Existing Accumulation?
The honest answer: we don’t have great evidence for specific interventions that clear accumulated microplastics from tissues.
What does appear to support overall cellular cleanup and detox capacity:
- Autophagy stimulation through intermittent fasting and exercise. Your cells’ recycling machinery handles damaged particles and debris
- Cruciferous vegetables: sulforaphane activates Nrf2, the master regulator of your body’s detox enzyme system
- Sauna: supports general toxin elimination through sweat (direct evidence for microplastics is limited but plausible)
- Adequate hydration with clean water: keeps elimination pathways functioning
The primary strategy is reduction of ongoing exposure. You can’t meaningfully detox your way out of continuing to drink from plastic bottles.
My Current Setup
- Water: Under-sink RO filter → glass pitchers and glass bottles
- Food storage: Pyrex glass containers for everything; stainless steel for travel
- Hot drinks: Ceramic mugs; loose-leaf tea in stainless infuser
- Groceries: Buy in glass jars or cardboard when possible; avoid canned goods lined with BPA (canned tomatoes are among the worst, very acidic, leaches heavily)
- Clothing: Transitioning out of synthetic workout gear toward merino wool and cotton
None of this requires major sacrifice. Most of it is cheaper long-term. The glass bottle I bought three years ago is still in perfect condition. The plastic bottles I was replacing every few months are gone.
The body burden question won’t be fully answered for years. But the direction of the research is clear enough that acting now seems far smarter than waiting for certainty.
